Prayer Requests

All beings want happiness and do not want suffering. For this, most people all over the world make prayers in order to fulfill wishes and to overcome difficulties in life.
Buddhist prayers can be quite elaborate and may take up to a full day or more to perform. Also Buddhist prayers can be done by the whole Sangha of monks. When this is the case, and all the monks attend with different offerings, it is called a Puja.
The monks may help you by performing Pujas on occations when things go wrong, like illness, death or when people feel they are unsuccessful in life.
Prayers require a lot of preparation and material.
Among the material we have to buy and use in the rituals (pujas) are:
  • butter lamps
  • flour for torma making (torma is a symbolic offerings made of organic material, see this youtube-clip for an idea of a very advanced torma-making)
  • incense
  • butter tea
  • milk, tea and ingredients for bread
  • offerings for the participating monks
  • firewood
  • khatas (silk scarves used in the rituals)
A suitable contribution/donation for the prayer(s) you request dependent on the number of monks and duration of prayer, is anywhere from €10-50. This will cover the cost of purchases mentioned above.
It is always helpful for your condition to accumulate merit by asking for a large puja - which means all of the monks participating for a full day. But money should never be an obstacle, therefore you should contribute what you are able to contribute.
But remember that the difference between one to four monks praying and a full 150 monk full-day puja can be likened to trying to clean your house with a broom that only has a couple of strands instead of a full brush. If you have the possibility to donate for a full 150 monk puja/prayer of your choice it is like brushing the house with a good, brand-new and strong brush! It is and should also be proportional to the life-situation you are trying to get help for.

To give you an idea of the cost for preparation and material of a full day puja with all monks participating, the average cost in November 2009 was roughly 3300 INR, or €50 or USD 70.
The smallest prayer we perform is reading out a name whilst doing our daily prayers. This is also something we can do if there is no possibility for you to contribute.
