Housing

When Sera Jey Ngari Khangtsen was first established in the 70-ies in Southern India, there was no prayer hall and (only) 35 monks living in 8 rooms. Already then this meant overcrowding the rooms that were made to house 2 monks comfortably.

In 2007 we were already over 150 monks. The 3 metre by 4 metre rooms house 3-4 monks each. The overcrowded monks’ quarters are extremely detrimental to their wellbeing. Especially so for student monks, as who are expected to undertake at least 6 hours of private study each day.

We were forced to turn away many disadvantaged children as we could not provide a roof over their head. We still have too few rooms to house all the children and refugees that apply to come to our Khangtsen, BUT...

2008 we commenced part one of the Housing Project!
This was made possible through sponsors and a smaller loan and is now is on its way to completion.

There is still the need for electricity and a fence to guard us from robbers, and the 20 rooms are not enough - but we are happy to say THANK you to all of you well-wishers and donors!

As of January 2010 we have space to build another 4-6 more building-blocks, given that we have donations, and there is room to build the longed-for water tank and a new prayer hall.

All of the monks have participated in the building of the 20 rooms - even the small monks have helped dispense water and food!

WE ARE NOT FINISHED - there is more to be done!

The cost of finishing housing block 1 and 2 (of the 8 blocks necessary for us), is
INR.1 520,000.00 - which will cover a much needed fence around the property and electrical wiring.

We also intend to build two more blocks of housing of 10 rooms each opposite the two that have been built, and we have made it possible to build a second story on all of the housing blocks! We also intend to build a new prayer hall and a water tank (see those menues above).

Total estimated costs required for hostel construction: INR 20,200,000.00.
Cost so far is approx. 5,5 million Rupies, of which 2/3 comes from donations and 1/3 from a bank loan.
